Are you doing vacation this year? Whether you vacant at home or travel, I hope you get some down time for solitude and family. We know that Jesus took such times on a regular basis. Judy and I hope to get away – maybe escape to Wisconsin for a few days later this summer. However I look forward to little mini-times of solitude nearly every night! I treasure those minutes! I love to go for a late night walk around 10:00 or 11:00 or just step out on our back deck and enjoy a very quiet time of solitude and personal prayer! It is a time to think, meditate and pray without interruption. And he (Jesus) said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves. Mar 6:31 32
Sometimes the prayers are pretty structured, but at other times they are meandering prayers. I appreciate memorized and printed prayers and I also appreciate the ex corde speaking with God. Prayer topics often include petitions for people, for the churches, for the world, for family, for self for whatever. This is a time of conversation with God which is vital to our spiritual well-being.
And then there is time for action, fun, sweat and even burgers and brats! The balanced Christian life provides opportunity for time and opportunity for family and friends to run and laugh and relax. You don’t have to leave town to do that – you can do it in the back yard, the city park or the countryside.
Rest, relax and restore as an individual and a family!
