The Role of the Parish Nurse in Your Congregation

The Parish Nurse (PN) program was started in 1984 by Rev. Granger Westberg initially involving Lutheran (ELCA), Catholic, and Methodist congregations.  In 1989 the PN program within the LCMS was started by Marcy Schnorr per request of Rev. Howard Mueller.  As noted by Rev. Matthew Harrison, “The PN is an invaluable asset to the pastoral staff by being an extension of the eyes and ears of the congregation’s shepherd.”  This is done through:

  • Providing information and resources to promote health and wellness for congregational members.
  • Offering emotional and spiritual care through personal visits.
  • Awareness and promotion of community health and wellness programs
  • Advocacy to ensure adequate health care and assistance in navigating the health care system.

To be designated as a Parish Nurse the nurse must have an active nurse’s license through the American Nurses Association and have completed a Parish Nurse course.  However, nurses and professionals in other health related fields, can serve in a similar capacity as a Congregational Health Advocate.

In order to update records, please contact Janet Hitzeman, R.N. – Indiana District PN Representative if your church currently has a Parish Nurse or Congregational Health Advocate.  If not please consider adding a PN to your Health Ministry Program.
