When I asked one of our elderly members how she was doing, she would always answer, “Still kicking, not as high and not as often, but still kicking!” Then on one Easter morning, she walked by with her walker and I again asked her how she was doing, “You know Pastor, on Easter I always kick high and often! Even with this walker, I feel like I have an extra kick in my step!”
Easter puts a lot more than an extra “kick in our step”. Most of us like spring, and some of us are glad to see the Cubs off to a good start and the warmer weather feels good! However, Easter really makes the difference! Easter puts life in our living! It gives us new life that we celebrate the Risen Christ! Easter makes a huge difference – now and forever!
Everything else can and does change, the weather can turn and the Cubs have been known to falter. However, our life in Christ is wonderfully eternal and never fails!
As Christians, we celebrate Easter every Sunday and rejoice in our brand new life in Christ every single day! The Church celebrates Easter “officially” for six weeks following Easter Sunday. However, we never get the joy of the Easter resurrection out of our hearts and minds! Its power is penetrating and permanent!
While sin still nags at us and we still run into trouble as we strive to live by faith, the victory of Christ means that we are truly forgiven – we live a new life and God’s grace is fresh every single moment of our lives! Our sin was nailed to the cross, Jesus bore the weight of our guilt and the fear of death has been destroyed. It was a huge price to pay for our lives, but it has been paid in full! We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Ro 6:4
Many people we know somehow missed the joy of Easter again. Faith in the meaning and power of the resurrection is the gift and work of the Holy Spirit! It is the gift we celebrate and share in many ways! May those around us and those that visit our churches see, hear and sense the difference Easter makes in the lives of real people like us!
Let us speak of the joy that burns within us as we vigorously share what keeps us “alive in Christ”! “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” 2 Cor 5:17
