Shining Christ’s Light in Kentucky

During the season of Epiphany, we rejoice especially in how Christ shines His light into our dark world, revealing Himself as the Savior of all mankind. Even as we give thanks for this gift, we seek to reflect His light in our communities, sharing His love with those around us.

Rev. John Hallock and the people of Good Shepherd, Lexington have certainly kept quite busy over the past few months shining God’s light in Kentucky! In addition to developing and distributing brochures inviting neighbors to their Advent services, they also hosted several well-attended outreach events. On November 11th, they held a special service to recognize and honor veterans in their community. Their Thanksgiving Dinner had over 50 people in attendance, enjoying food and fellowship.

On December 6th they hosted a “Church In Dialogue” event,

where local pastors from various denominations discussed theological differences. This event was also very well attended, providing Rev. Hallock an opportunity to extol confessional Lutheran theology in a region of the country where Lutherans are relatively unknown.

Good Shepherd also hosted a Christmas program for the Lutheran School of Lexington. While this preschool is supported by the congregation, most of the students and their families are not currently members of Good Shepherd, making this a key outreach opportunity. In conjunction with the Christmas program, the members of Good Shepherd made stockings for each of the children.

Other outreach efforts continue to bear fruit as well. Rev. Hallock’s football coaching provides opportunities for conversations that have resulted in six visitors over the past month, and youth catechesis classes have begun at Good Shepherd. There are also discussions ongoing with the local library and with Eastern Kentucky University regarding the potential use of their facilities as meeting spaces for church planting.

We give thanks to God for continuing to bless these evangelism efforts, and we thank you for joining us in praying for this work.

If you are moved to support these efforts financially in addition to with your prayers, please send a check to “Indiana District-LCMS” 1145 Barr Street Fort Wayne IN 46802 with “Outreach Kentucky” on the memo line. Thank you!
