New Lutheran School in Gary

Published on August 28th, 2015

In May 2015, we reported that efforts are underway to open a new Lutheran school in Gary, Indiana. While we have postponed opening kindergarten until next fall, steady progress is being made toward realizing this dream.

Over the past several months, Dr. Mielke had the privilege of meeting with Richard Laabs, Frank Trecroci, Jason and Sue Zientara, and other Lutheran leaders in the Gary area. Additional productive conversations are scheduled to help us continue to move the project forward.

With the assistance of the Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF), we have completed a demographic study of the number of families with school-age children within a five-mile radius of Our Saviour Lutheran Church. Building inspections are being scheduled.

The pastors of the Hammond and Gary Circuits have released $182,039 toward this project from the closing of Hope Lutheran Church in Cedar Lake, Indiana. The LUMIN Foundation has expressed interest in partnering with the Indiana District to start our new school.

Meanwhile, the existing after-school program in Gary continues to serve children ages five to twelve.

We look forward to continuing progress toward the opening of Ascension Lutheran School in Gary, Indiana!
