Mother’s Day

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? Joh 14:1-2

This Sunday is the 5th glorious Sunday of Easter!  It is also Mother’s Day!  As we celebrate this Sunday we hear Jesus promise that He is going to prepare a place for us in heaven even as He reminds us that He is the way, the truth and the life!  These are wonderful and strong themes to share in our preaching and our teaching in the church.

Along with our powerful resurrection joy comes the opportunity to thank God for the gift of faithful mothers.  Paul remembers the blessing of Timothy’s mother and grand-mother in Timothy’s life, I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.  For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2Ti 1:5 -7

Moms do “fan into flame the gift of God” as they live out their Christian vocation.  I always knew that my mom was praying for me.  As I was matriculating through school I treasured the letters (in the old days people wrote letters) that I received from her.  She was a faithful and encouraging writer who shared her faith and demonstrated her resurrection joy!  She is now with the Lord and I am happy for her!

If your mom is still with you, let her know the gift of God she is in your life.  If your mom is with the Lord this is a good time to remember and thank God for her witness to you as you grew and matured.  If you are a mom, know what a treasure you are!  I am more and more convinced that the “hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.”  Evidently, Paul thought that too in his reference to Timothy’s mom and grandmother!

And he {Jesus} said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.  Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. Luk 10:2 -3
