Mission Festival Sunday

Published on March 6th, 2017

Do you remember the days when most of our LCMS congregations had a mission festival event? The last church that I served in Altamont, Illinois had a mission festival Sunday every year. It was a great experience.  We invited a missionary who was working in cross cultural ministry either in the foreign field or in the United States of America to be our guest preacher for the morning service.  Following that service we had a great time of fellowship with a church potluck.  And then in the evening we had another Divine Service featuring one of the new pastors or vicars serving in our circuit.  It was a great time to get to know the new guy in our midst.  Following this Divine Service we usually had an ice cream social put on by the Bethlehem Lutheran youth group.

These Mission Sundays emphasized our walking together in supporting the mission work of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  These Mission Sundays also highlighted in the minds of the members their connectedness with the rest of the church while emphasizing that the church is in mission because that is what God enables us to do.  Mission is the church in action.

Why not consider having an annual Mission Festival Sunday if you are not doing so? It will be a blessing to your congregants. If you need help in setting a Mission Festival up, please call my office at 800-837-1145 extension 2208.  I will be glad to help you in whatever way that I can.  And if you would like me to come and preach, please know that I will consider it a great privilege to do so.
