Do you ever feel hopeless? Hopelessness in earthly matters is very common. Sometimes my favorite team is hopelessly behind. A minute to go and down by three touchdowns, 30 seconds and the other team has the ball and we are trailing by 10 points. These are hopeless moments and none of us likes them.
On the other hand during Advent we celebrate a real and present hope in Jesus Christ! “For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8
We have a sure and eternal hope that centers and moves our lives forward in faith! We are never without hope and that means we need not ever fall into despair! We know how our story turns out because of the empty tomb of Easter morning! Israel waited for the promised Messiah for a long time – sometimes patiently – sometimes not. Even in our weaknesses the Holy Spirit sustains our hope! Rejoice in the hope of the Gospel!
