2018 Spring Symposium at Lutheran Child & Family Services

May 17, 2018 @ 9:00 am

The cross has a storied history for Christianity. This history is important to the church as we consider its use and message today. Dr. Roin Jensen of the University of Notre Dame will explore the history of the cross as the symbol of Christianity. Additionally, the conversation will explore other early Christian symbols (fish, anchor, etc.) and discuss the problem of the cross and propose new ways to view examine it.

Robin M. Jensen is the Patrick O’Brien Professor of Theology and Concurrent Professor of the History of Art at the University of Notre Dame. Her research and publication focuses on the relationship between early Christian art and literature and ways architectural spaces accommodated ritual practices. Her recent publications include The Cross: History, Art, and Controversy (Harvard University Press, 2017); Christianity in Roman Africa: The Development of its Practices and Beliefs (Eerdmans, 2014); and Living Water: Images, Symbols, and Settings of Early Christian Baptism (Brill, 2011).  HERE  is a link to her faculty page for you to learn a bit more about her.
