Does Easter Seem Too Good to be True?

Ask “Doubting Thomas”!

The power, joy and victory of Easter takes a while to sink in!  I had a parishioner who always anticipated this Sunday and the Gospel lesson for this Sunday:  As you would guess his name is Thomas.  My pastor is named Thomas, my brother is named Thomas and I have a grandson named Thomas.

Who would not want to know, trust and have eternal life?  It is hard to comprehend anyone who would not want to have eternal life.  We hear all kinds of advertisements about production that are intended to “extend” life on this earth and people buy them quickly.  We hear about people who want to freeze their bodies after death with the hope of being “thawed out” later for a longer life.

Those who find no joy in Easter may believe that it sounds too good to be true!  We are surrounded by people with similar doubt and the fear to trust the Easter victory! That’s where Thomas was when he said, Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”  He like many people we know just doubted that such news could be true!  I suppose they consider it “fake” news.

Thomas wanted PROOF!   A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.’”

Once this has happened he declared his faith!  Thomas said to him, My Lord and my God!”  It was with this resurrection certainty that Thomas was a faithful Apostle who evidently traveled to India (often considered the patron saint of India) where he died.

All of the Thomas’s I know today make the same bold confession of this first Thomas!  If you know a Thomas it would be great to remind him of the first Thomas who had doubts that resurrection reality turned into a bold faith!

P.S.  Are you remembering the deadline for nominations for district president and all positions to be elected?  It is April 13! That is this Friday!!!
