As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”
This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'”
The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” Mat 21:1
As Jesus rides into Jerusalem He is on the mission of His Father and that mission is us! Holy Week is a kind of crescendo as Jesus moves to Jerusalem, the upper room and then the cross! He teaches, preaches, prays to His Father with His disciples and meticulously carries out the will of the Father for our salvation. We are humbled by the privilege we have to teach and preach about Jesus doing for us what we could never do for ourselves.
And then there is Holy Saturday as we recall that Jesus is the only would who could or would go to hell and back for us!
This Sunday is Palm Sunday and we will remember the triumphant entry of our Lord in Jerusalem! Next Sunday our voices will join with global Christianity in proclaiming, “He is Risen! He is Risen indeed! May God bless your holy work this Holy Week!
In the cross of Christ I glory,
towering o’er the wrecks of time;
all the light of sacred story
gathers round its head sublime.
When the woes of life o’ertake me,
hopes deceive, and fears annoy,
never shall the cross forsake me:
lo! it glows with peace and joy.
When the sun of bliss is beaming
light and love upon my way,
from the cross the radiance streaming
adds more luster to the day.
Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure,
by the cross are sanctified;
peace is there that knows no measure,
joys that thro all time abide.
May God bless you, your family and your congregation with a blessed Easter! In Christ, Daniel
