A Discerning Heart

If God were to give you one gift, what would you request? What if you asked your students that same question? What might their response be? You already have His love and forgiveness. You already have the promise of eternal life with Him in heaven. The Holy Spirit continues to work the gift of faith in you which already begun at your Baptism. If God were to offer you one earthly blessing in addition to the beautiful spiritual gifts you have already through His grace, what would you request? And, would it not be great to get the chance to choose one special earthly gift?

Solomon had that chance. The Lord gave to Solomon the chance to ask for one earthly gift. Solomon could have asked for things that made his life easier or more comfortable. But, Solomon asked for an earthly gift that could help him carry out his responsibilities toward the people that God entrusted to him. Solomon asked God for a “discerning heart.” As a result of this ask, God bestowed onto Solomon wisdom. As 1 Kings 4:29 says, “God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.” The gift of wisdom allowed Solomon to make God-pleasing decisions for those he was serving.

What about you and your students? You impart wisdom each time you direct young adults and children back into God’s Word. You impart wisdom every time you direct your students back to the Cross of Jesus. Receiving forgiveness and wisdom enables you and your students to serve God and others more willingly and joyfully.

May God continue to bless your ministry and give you a discerning heart!
